  . Thyroid disorders are complications that affect the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. The thyroid plays a critical role in regulating many metabolic processes throughout the body. The thyroid gland is located beneath Adam's apple and is encircled by the trachea (windpipe). The isthmus is a thin area of tissue in the gland's center that connects the two thyroid lobes on each side. Thyroxine, also known as T4, is the gland's primary hormone. A small portion of the T4 released by the gland is converted to triiodothyronine (T3), the most active hormone, after being delivered to the body's tissues via the bloodstream.
